'The Haiku Handbook' is essential reading for those wishing to comprehend the haiku. If only every grade school teacher that decides to do a haiku writing lesson would read this book first. Too many come out of such lessons thinking that writing a haiku is just a matter of counting up syllables.This book goes into the traditions of haiku at great length and enables a serious student to understand what a haiku actually is, and how to tell a good one from a second-rate one.For poets who'd like to try writing haiku, this book gives an overwhelming amount of information. I'd recommend going slow and reading and rereading useful sections rather than dashing through it and trying to apply everything you've learned all at once.One useful feature of the book is an extensive list of traditional season-words (a traditional haiku always has a season-word). Looking over the list may help you find a season word that can act as a poetry prompt for your next haiku.

I received a copy of The Haiku Handbook- 25th Anniversary Edition as a Christmas gift. I am so glad to finally have a copy of this classic haiku resource book for myself, instead of borrowing one from our local library.For anyone who writes, teaches or just enjoys haiku poetry, this is a must have book. One that you will refer to again and again, for inspiration, historical references and so much more.A nice presentation for this edition too. Makes a perfect gift. ;<) I certainly thought it was.Only one negative on the book presentation...I did note a couple of typos on the first few pages, something that the publishers might want to correct before reprinting this book.Geraldine Helen Hartman author of the Haiku Reflections series.

I have a tendency to be too wordy in my writing, so to learn more focus and control, I have been studying (and writing) haiku. The Haiku Handbook has been an engaging resource for me in those efforts. Each of the book's five sections contains a wealth of ideas and information that both challenges and inspires:Part One: Haiku Old and New [A great introduction to the experience of haiku and to Japanese Masters. The "Why Haiku" is helpful in clarifying one's purpose for writing such brief poetry.]Part Two: The Art of Haiku [Natural themes, the form and craft of haiku; this is the section that I like best, and I repeatedly refer back to these pages. Excellent book on haiku poetry. A lot of historical info about the prominent Haiku writers. The book transitions from haiku history to instruction, with a sharp focus on exemplar haiku and the poetic characteristics of a well-written haiku. I wish there was more of a focus on the instructional aspects than the historical and cultural evolution of haiku. Nevertheless, Higginson's book is a great read and I intend on reading it a second time.

I was so happy to get this for my hubby. He use to own it but his was destroyed a few years back. So I wanted to give it to him for Christmas. He was talking about it like 4 days before Christmas so much one day that I broke down and gave it to him early. He has been playing songs from it daily. Thanks so much. Awesome job. Thrilled I was able to find this rare Neil Young Gem! It contains some of his BEST work and a few tunes I was previously unfamiliar with. This is a MUST HAVE for your Neil Young collection. Excellent for piano, guitar, vocals and bass.

I love this book, but I think Volume I and particularly II are better music books. This book has some great stuff in it, including photos, and a little bio stuff, but it isn't as deep as either of the first two thus the 4 out of 5 star rating. But for any Neil Young Fan, this is one for the collection.

A great book but I found THE Classroom Management Book (by the same author) more helpful than this one. The First Days of School sets the stage for the strategy of procedures in the classroom. THE Classroom Management Book fast-forwards through theory and shows real-life procedures that you can actually use. If you already have a good grasp of teaching philosophies or you've been teaching for more than a year, you can probably skip this one and go straight to the sequel.

I had always heard that this book was useful & was like the educator's bible, but when it arrived I wasn't sure if I would agree (it looks like an outdated book!). After reading the required chapters for class, I realized how true it was that this book was an educator's goldmine to pertinent information to make the first day of school go smoothly. I highly encourage young teachers to purchase this book & read it, & keep it in your library for years to come! There is so much useful information in here that I doubt many people would disagree with Wong's ideas!

One of the books in my teaching canon. Great for new teachers. Go slow to go fast! Spending time putting in routines, rituals, and expectations in the beginning of the year saves all kinds of teaching time and sorrow later in the year.

This is a great book for teaching at elementary level with innocent minds. Also, there are many good organizational tips. However, when teaching Algebra II to public high school students in a socially dysfunctional area where student respect for even society at large is in trouble, then this book fails to provide the character building plans to save such students.

This is great tool to help you get the year started off right! I read this book this summer before taking the online courses offered through Utah State University's STEDI program. I'm working as a substitute teacher and started the year off in a long term assignment, so this was a huge help in soothing my beginning of the year jitters and answering questions that I knew the answer to but offered reassurances. I find myself going back to it sometimes for new ideas and encouragement. It's great for the first time teacher just as much as for the seasoned teacher!

As an education student this book is a required reading for one of our classes. After going through the book I have to honestly say this book should have been required a lot earlier in the program as I have found the information in this book to be more helpful than any of the other books that we were required to read.The information by Harry K. Wong in this book is an absolute must for any new, or experienced, teacher. The book is not full of technical jargon, as many books on education are, and is written in a simple format that makes it an easy read. And to complete the entire package there is a website that goes along with the book that expands on much of the information in the book making it an even more invaluable resource.Harry K. Wong is my Educational Hero.

Pretty easy read consider it was a textbook.Good information, but too much of telling you what you need to achieve, without enough information on how to achieve it.Lot of good stories, but not enough in-depth information on how to create good "classroom management".

This is one of the most amazing books on teaching practices I have ever read! I love how it starts out with a warning that it's not a book for those who see teaching as a "job" but for those who see it an opportunity to change lives. There are so many great, practical ideas that I am already using - and LOVING the results! If you are a teacher, studying to be a teacher, or love a teacher you must read this book.A bonus for me was I got a used copy that someone had put notes in the margins with some additional ideas to add to the book - love it! It's like an exchange of great ideas. I know my students' educational experiences will be so much better because I have read (and am totally keeping for reference) this book!
