A very good book. Research was thorough and presented in an interesting way. In reading other people's reviews for previous works when they downgrade the rating because of formatting or other errors I always got a little irritated. I guess I had been lucky and never really got a Kindle book that had so many errors that it hurt the quality of the book. This is the first time. So many formatting errors on the Kindle edition. You'd be reading along and in the middle of the page there would be an out of place footnote. Then a few out of place words. Then you wound up back where you should be. Exclamation points, quotation marks, asterix, unneeded spaces between words, space in words.... Very frustrating. The actual story. . . a five....the errors in formatting are just too numerous for it to go without a remark and a downgrade. Should be withdrawn, reformatted, and resubmitted.

This ebook was obviously published from an unfinished copy of the manuscript , because it is absolutely filled with typos. I'm a third of the way in and I've found at least one per page. And I'm reading on a Kindle iPhone app so the pages aren't long at all. There's even a very obvious misspelling in a chapter title. (Some chapters are written in dialect, but I'm not referring to those as they're obviously style choices. The chapter heading says "Mariage" instead of "Marriage.") Sometimes the mistakes make the dialogue unclear. When quotation marks and line breaks are omitted, it can be difficult to tell who is saying what without rereading entire conversations.The story is good this far, but if you're put off by poor punctuation or spelling, go for the paperback. Often final proofreading is done after typesetting, and some publishing companies cut corners by formatting pre-typeset drafts for the ebook editions. Then they don't bother having that proofread. Frustrating.

After browsing some of the reviews on here, I bought the kindle edition. The book itself is interesting yet has way too many grammatical errors to count on both hands and feet. The chapters themselves could have also been a little longer than a page. Not the quality of work I've expected from such a great author

Having lived in the Rochester area and remembered the times when the killings were going on, I wanted to understand more about Shawcross. However, the life story of one of the Watertown's victim's mother was irrelevant, boring and took up way too much of the book, to the point where it appears it was added as empty filler. The author's attempt to mimic the accents of various people was very poorly done and detracted from the story. Overall, this is poorly written book and so not worth any amount spent on it. I would give it zero stars if permitted.

Interesting but a little slow. It's a unique approach to documenting a serial killer, by interviewing relatives of the victims, and excerpts from psychiatric reviews of the killer. Not to mention, talking with love interests of the killer. I'm not sure how this could have been better written, but it lacked something to keep me turning pages. I'd pick it up from time to time and read a little, then put it back down again. I've read other books by Jack Olsen, and they were page turners for me. It almost seemed like a completely different author was writing this book. But all in all, it was still worth the read.

Grueling to read, extremely disturbing, a tradgedy of lives both serial killer and victims.I literally had to constantly take breaks reading this book, I found it so upsetting. My heart went out to little Karen and her mother who kept beating herself up with " if I'd only..".I know the pain she feels as I've lived it first hand in an incident that happened to my daughter at our church. It only takes a fraction of a split second for the unimaginable to happen.The author does an excellent job of telling Art Shawcross's story, almost TOO good a job as it's like a knife to the heart to read.To come to the realization of what a horrible job our parole, courts, and some psychiatrist's do for people like Art is unbelievable .The story of Art Shawcross is so unfathomable, that at times I felt I was reading something out of a James Patterson novel! I had to keep reminding myself that what I was reading really did happen. Then this realization shakes you to the very core of your being.

This book gives a detailed view of the life and crimes of Authur Shawcross. The book talks of his early life and then talks of his first kills, a young boy and a little girl. It's not a spoiler to say he was convicted and spent time in prison. On his release he began to kill prostitutes. This is all covered in detail often switching between characters , Shawcross himself, the police and the local prostitutes. It finishes up with a psychiatric analysis of Shawcross. The book is long and there is a lot of detail- maybe too much. My real reason for rating the book as 3 rather than 4 was the very large number of text to digital errors. At times these errors were not only irritating but confusing. I read a lot and I've been reading Kindle books for about 3.5 years and without doubt this book is the most error ridden I've seen - not the author's fault. It was actually well written.

First, there are errors due to the scanning process to convert the book from paper to ebook. Just try to think of them as amusing like with the Amazon Echo misunderstands you and answers strangely. As for the book, I was annoyed by the way every chapter is written as if it were actually written by one of the people involved in the case. It really made me lose trust in just how much was fictional and how much was accurate. And, dang, it can on and on about the family history of a person. I don't just mean how Shawcross was raised but the great grandparents of a victim that died ages before and had nothing to do with the story in the least. There were definitely times I just had to skip page after page because they were just useless. Otherwise, Shawcross is an interesting character but I can't say this book really did much to explain him. On the other hand, it appears nobody ever really figured him out.

Lerner encourages parents to promote healthy, positive, admirable, and productive behaviors in our young people. His approach focuses on the Five C's: Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, and Caring. He theorizes that a kid secure in the Five C's will probably be equipped to avoid real storm and strife during adolescence. The how tos of such an enterprise are a bit hard to pin down, so Lerner uses anecdotes to examine how parents might guide a teen's behavior in a specific situation. For parents with kids in serious trouble (unsafe sex, drugs, violent behavior, etc.), a small chapter toward the end of the book will have to suffice. Lerner's positive approach to parenting sometimes may be a little simplistic, but his optimism is encouraging. RICHARD M. LERNER, Ph.D. is the Bergstrom Chair in Applied Developmental Science and the director of the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development, Tufts University. He has been teaching and researching the characteristics of successful teens for more than thirty years, and his renowned work has appeared on Good Morning America, and in Newsweek and USA Today, among others. Dr. Jay E. Adams is Director of Advanced Studies and Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido, California. He received his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University, his B.D. from the Reformed Episcopal Theological Seminary, his S.T.M. from Temple University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. In addition to having served as a pastor and then a Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Dr. Adams has been the Dean of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation, Laverock, Pennsylvania, since its founding in the early 1970s. He has written over fifty books, translated the New Testament into English (The Christian Counselor’s New Testament), and lectured throughout the world. His books deal with many aspects of pastoral ministry and counseling as well as Bible study and practical Christian living

Jay E. Adams (PhD, University of Missouri) is a former director of advanced studies and professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, as well as a retired pastor. In July 1944, after 28 days of bloody battle, the island of Saipan was declared secured. All Japanese troops were assumed dead and all resistance ended. As in most Pacific battles, a number of enemy troops escaped to hide in the hills and jungle. Captain Sakae Oba, one of the Japanese soldiers on Saipan, a former high school geography teacher, organized a party of some 300 soldiers and civilians. He fed, clothed, and sheltered them in jungle villages and caves. Oba carried on a guerrilla campaign against the American garrison and refused to surrender until he personally received instructions from the Imperial General Staff. One criticism: Jones tells nothing of Oba's life in postwar Japan. His readers will regret not knowing what became of this tenacious officer. Essential for all World War II collections. This book was not my cup of tea at all. The author keeps going on and on about Harris in a very vindictive and and bordering on a hateful way. I am a strong believer and purchased the book for my son who says he's an atheist, but Ravi came on so strong and ugly that I doubt he'll read past his first few assaults. What a turn off!

I bought this book specifically to compare with Sam Harris’ “End of Faith” and was quite disappointed. It jumps around like a rambling steam on consciousness and you have to ignore many of the glaring inconsistencies to find some of the good points he makes. I’ve had several good reads in the science vs religion debate, but this offered very little to further my knowledge.

Ravi is fired up in this one. If you like Ravi, you’ll like this book. The tone was a little more agrressive (for lack of a better term) here than I had noticed with him previously. It almost seemed personal at times, but not in a negative way. Just a little different from the typical Ravi. It’s a good book, but I think Doug Wilson has done a better job in responding to Harris and Hitchens.

Reading it right now. Everything of Ravi Zacharias is excellent. So far, this book is excellent, too. He really gives one pause to reflect. Its contents is very deep, but easy to understand. Yes, I highly recommend this book for Christians and atheists alike. Agnostics will benefit from Ravi's work, too.

Excellent book to answer the common points placed forward by today's atheists. Zacharias is clearly intelligent and has studied these issues in depth. I highly recommend this book.

Another wonderful book by one of the most brilliant writers today! Imminently logical, unapologetically Christian, he thoughtfully takes on the questions of worldviews.

I wonder if Sam Harris would ever read this book and find how his arguments have been absurd, however I will pray for Sam Harris than laugh at his arguments.

I have read a lot of books on trauma, PTSD, etc over the past two years. This one is a great synopsis of the trauma but also takes it from the individual to the national level with excellent questions. Almost all of the books I have read have not included the spiritual element. This one does. That is needed just as much as the emotional, physical, intellectual ways of addressing the issue of trauma from the individual to the nation state. I would say if you can only read one book on trauma - this should be the one.

I gave this four stars, but honestly I had mixed feelings. The book was well written, and much of it made sense and was well thought out. However, there was one little chunk that lost me here. It basically stated that victims, in order to recover, needed to discover within themselves what they had done in order to cause their aggressor to harm them. I had SERIOUS issues with that. Skip that chapter and it isn't a bad little book

Excellent introduction. It leaves you wishing for more. But then—it is a "Little Book."

This is a good book for anyone who has had something tramatic in their life happen. I read it once and am going to read it again because it has great section on helpful advice.

The most amazing book I've read about trauma, and how to break out of the cycle of trauma. Yoder packs so much information in such a little book. I think it is a book that everyone she read, especially if you work with people because you will see how most of us are effected in some way by trauma.

This small book helps me to understand how to respond to traumatic situations as well as helping others to cope and manage traumatic situations.
